How to use Boomerang Monkey

Boomerang Monkey is a flexible Primary tower: it can clear early rushes, carry the mid game against Ceramics and MOABs, and still scale into the late game with Glaive Lord or Perma Charge. The catch is Camo, so always plan where your camo detection comes from.

Best crosspaths

3-2-0 Glaive Ricochet

Glaives bounce between Bloons automatically, so this crosspath clears grouped rounds very efficiently for its price. Version 54 lowered its pierce but increased its bounce distance and projectile speed, so it still works well as an early to mid-game clearer, especially on maps where Bloons bunch up.

4-2-0 M.O.A.R Glaives

M.O.A.R Glaives became much cheaper in recent updates. It is a strong mid-game cleaner for dense rounds and a good stepping stone to Glaive Lord. It still needs Camo support.

0-3-2 Bionic Boomerang

Bionic Boomerang throws extremely fast and gets bonus damage against MOAB-class Bloons. With Red Hot Rangs it also pops Lead and Frozen Bloons. It is one of the best cheap mid-game damage towers in the game and benefits a lot from damage buffs.

0-4-2 Turbo Charge

Turbo Charge adds an ability that massively speeds up attacks for 10 seconds. Time it for MOAB and BFB rounds or Ceramic rushes. Red Hot Rangs keeps it able to pop Lead and adds damage.

2-0-4 or 0-2-4 MOAB Press

MOAB Press throws heavy kylies that hit MOAB-class Bloons several times and sometimes push them back along the track. 2-0-4 gives the knockback kylie more pierce, while 0-2-4 attacks more often. Both are strong anti-MOAB options for their cost, especially on long straight tracks.

5-2-0 Glaive Lord

Glaive Lord surrounds itself with three orbiting glaives and makes its glaives shred MOAB-class Bloons over time. It is the only Boomerang upgrade with Camo detection.

0-5-2 Perma Charge

Perma Charge keeps the Turbo Charge speed permanently. With Red Hot Rangs it pops Lead, which matters for DDTs.

Early game

A Boomerang Monkey is not the cheapest opener, but on maps with loops or tight curves a single Boomerang placed on the inside of a curve can cover a lot of track. In CHIMPS, a cheap 0-1-1 or 1-1-0 Boomerang is a decent support tower on multi-lane maps.

Placement matters more for Boomerangs than for most towers. A boomerang flies out in an arc and comes back, so the best spots are on the inside of a bend where both halves of the arc cross the track. Use the Change Hands targeting option to flip the direction of the arc if the default throw misses most of the path. Kylie Boomerangs are the exception: they fly in a straight line, so they want a long straight section instead.

Buy Improved Rangs or Faster Throwing first, depending on whether you need more pierce or more attack speed. Remember that it has no Camo, so pair it with a Dart Monkey or another tower that covers the camo green on round 24.

Mid game

This is where the Boomerang Monkey shines. A 0-3-2 Bionic Boomerang is a classic mid-game carry: it pops Lead, deals bonus MOAB damage and costs very little. From there you can go to 0-4-2 Turbo Charge for MOAB and BFB rounds.

If your problem is dense rounds rather than MOABs, 3-2-0 or 4-2-0 clears them well. If you need dedicated MOAB control on a long straight track, 2-0-4 MOAB Press is a strong pick because its knockback also buys time for the rest of your defense.

Add Camo support at this stage. A 0-2-0 Monkey Village is the simplest solution and also boosts nearby towers.

Late game

For the late game, the Boomerang Monkey has three real options:

  • Glaive Lord (5-x-x): strong against Ceramics and MOAB-class Bloons over time, with built-in Camo detection.
  • Perma Charge (x-5-x): permanent high attack speed. With Red Hot Rangs and buffs it deals heavy single-target damage.
  • MOAB Domination (x-x-5): very strong pushback and damage against MOAB-class Bloons, but expensive.

The Paragon, Glaive Dominus, is a late-game and freeplay option that also speeds up all your Primary Monkeys.

Boomerang Monkey in CHIMPS

Boomerang Monkey is a reliable CHIMPS tower in the mid game. A common pattern:

  1. Start with cheap Dart Monkeys or a cheap hero.
  2. Add a 0-3-2 Bionic Boomerang around the late 20s or early 30s for Leads and the first MOABs.
  3. Upgrade to 0-4-2 for MOAB and BFB rounds, and use Turbo Charge on the hardest parts of each round.
  4. Add Camo support and a separate late-game carry, or commit to Glaive Lord or Perma Charge.

On long straight maps, a 2-0-4 MOAB Press can replace a lot of anti-MOAB spending. For full CHIMPS walkthroughs, see our videos on the BTD6 Master YouTube channel.

Best heroes and tower combos

The Boomerang Monkey does not have a dedicated hero. Choose a hero that covers what the Boomerang lacks, especially Camo detection or early damage. The best tower combos are:

  • Monkey Village: Radar Scanner (x-2-x) for Camo, Primary Training for extra pierce and range.
  • Alchemist: Berserker Brew and its stronger upgrades boost fast-attacking Bionic and Perma Charge Boomerangs a lot because the brew adds damage to every throw.
  • Mermonkey: The Final Harmonic pairs well with Glaive Lord and Glaive Dominus, which apply damage-over-time effects.
  • Glue or Ice: slowing Bloons keeps them inside the boomerang's curve for longer.
  • Pat Fusty: his Rallying Roar lets nearby towers pop an extra layer per hit for a short time, which is a big boost for very fast attackers like Bionic Boomerang, Turbo Charge and Perma Charge.

Tier 5 upgrades: are they worth it?

Glaive Lord (5-x-x). Worth it if you need Camo detection and steady damage against Ceramics and MOABs in one tower. Its shred effect cannot hurt DDTs unless the tower can pop Lead, so it needs support there.

Perma Charge (x-5-x). A good late-game damage tower, especially with an Alchemist brew. Take the 0-5-2 crosspath for Lead popping.

MOAB Domination (x-x-5). Very strong against MOAB-class Bloons and buys time with knockback, but it is one of the pricier Primary tier 5 upgrades. Most players only buy it on maps that suit its straight-line kylies.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting Camo. Boomerang Monkeys only see Camo with Glaive Lord.
  • Skipping Red Hot Rangs. Without x-x-2 your Bionic or Turbo Boomerang cannot pop Lead or Frozen Bloons.
  • Placing Kylies on curves. Kylie Boomerang and MOAB Press throw in straight lines. Place them facing a long straight section of track.
  • Using Turbo Charge on easy waves. Save the ability for MOAB, BFB or Ceramic-heavy rounds.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Boomerang Monkey path?

For the mid game, 0-3-2 Bionic Boomerang and 0-4-2 Turbo Charge are the most popular. For dense rounds, 3-2-0 or 4-2-0. For MOABs on straight tracks, 2-0-4 MOAB Press.

Can Boomerang Monkey pop camo?

Only with Glaive Lord (5-x-x). Every other build needs camo detection from a Monkey Village, a hero or another support.

Can Boomerang Monkey pop lead?

Yes, with Red Hot Rangs (x-x-2). It also lets the Boomerang pop Frozen Bloons and adds damage.

Is Boomerang Monkey good in CHIMPS?

Yes. 0-3-2 and 0-4-2 are reliable mid-game carries in CHIMPS, as long as you supply Camo detection.

Is Glaive Lord or Perma Charge better?

Glaive Lord brings its own Camo detection and handles groups and Ceramics well. Perma Charge deals more focused damage and pops Lead with the 0-5-2 crosspath. Pick based on what your defense is missing.

What is the Boomerang Monkey Paragon?

Glaive Dominus. It costs $375,000 on Medium and also speeds up every Primary Monkey on screen.
