Guide
Monkey Knowledge (MK) is BTD6's permanent upgrade system for your whole account. You spend Monkey Knowledge Points on small bonuses spread over six trees, and those bonuses apply in every game where MK is allowed: extra starting cash, cheaper towers, more pierce, faster heroes and much more. It is the main reason a late-game account plays very differently from a fresh one.
How to earn Monkey Knowledge Points
- Levelling up. From level 30 you earn one Knowledge Point per player level, except at levels 33 and 36. This is where most of your points come from, so every game you play counts.
- Achievements. A handful of achievements pay Knowledge Points. The biggest are Ultimate Bloons Master (beat 15 maps on CHIMPS, 4 points), 2TC (beat CHIMPS with only two towers, 2 points) and Superior Bloons Master (5 CHIMPS maps, 2 points). Bloons Master, Sapper, Rising Star, Monkey Philanthropist, All for one and one for one, A year in the making and Mid Season give 1 point each.
- Shop. Points and an early Knowledge unlock can also be bought, but this is optional.
In total, 138 points can be earned without paying, which is enough to unlock everything.
How Monkey Knowledge costs work
Every knowledge costs exactly one point, but deeper rows have two extra conditions:
- Points in that tree. From the third row down, you need a minimum number of points already spent in the same tree. For example, the lowest row of the Military and Support trees needs 14 points invested in that tree.
- A one-time Monkey Money fee. Rows four, five and six cost 250, 500 and 1,000 Monkey Money the first time you unlock a knowledge there.
Each knowledge also has a parent: you must own the one above it (shown by the connecting line) before you can buy it.
Can you reset Monkey Knowledge?
Yes. A respec costs 2,000 Monkey Money and refunds every Knowledge Point you have spent. The Monkey Money you paid for deep knowledge is not lost: those knowledges stay paid for, so re-buying them later only costs a point.
You can also toggle knowledge for free. The MK menu lets you switch all knowledge off and on again, or disable single knowledges, without refunding anything. Use this to turn off a bonus you do not want in a specific game.
The six Monkey Knowledge trees
Primary
The Primary tree boosts Primary towers such as the Dart Monkey, Boomerang Monkey, Bomb Shooter, Tack Shooter, Ice Monkey and Glue Gunner, but its bottom row helps every game. Bonus Monkey! starts each game with a free Dart Monkey, Bonus Glue Gunner with a free Glue Gunner (only one free tower per game), and More Cash raises starting cash by $200, from $650 to $850 in most modes. Master Double Cross lets you own two Crossbow Masters, and early picks like Extra Dart Pops make the starting Dart Monkey noticeably stronger.
Military
Military boosts Military towers such as the Sniper Monkey, Monkey Sub, Monkey Buccaneer, Monkey Ace, Heli Pilot, Mortar Monkey and Dartling Gunner. The standouts are Military Conscription (your first Military tower each game costs two thirds of its price), Advanced Logistics (all Military towers 5% cheaper) and Big Bloon Sabotage, which makes every MOAB-class Bloon spawn already damaged. Elite Military Training speeds up XP for Military towers, which matters when you are still unlocking upgrades.
Magic
Magic boosts Magic towers such as the Wizard Monkey, Super Monkey, Ninja Monkey, Alchemist and Druid. The first stop for most players is Mo' Monkey Money: +10% Monkey Money from every game win, reached in three points via Magic Tricks and Speedy Brewing. Deeper down, Mana Shield absorbs up to 25 lives for free and slowly recharges, and Hot Magic lets every Magic tower pop frozen Bloons.
Support
Support boosts Support towers such as the Banana Farm, Spike Factory and Monkey Village, plus several bonuses that affect every tower. Veteran Monkey Training cuts reload time of all towers by 3%, Global Ability Cooldowns cuts all ability cooldowns by 3%, Better Sell Deals makes every tower sell for 5% more and Healthy Bananas gives lives from Marketplaces and Central Markets. At the bottom, Bank Deposits and Paragon of Power are late-game essentials.
Heroes
The Heroes tree is short (13 knowledges) and every hero player should finish it. Empowered Heroes starts heroes at level 3, Hero Favors cuts hero base cost by 10%, Self Taught Heroes adds 10% hero XP, and Big Bloon Blueprints and Weak Point add bonus damage to MOAB-class, Ceramic and Fortified Bloons.
Powers
The Powers tree improves the consumable Powers. It is the least important tree, but a few nodes are worth it: Pre-Game Prep gives a free pile of permanent Road Spikes at the end of the track every game, Powerful Monkey Storm and Supa-Thrive upgrade popular Powers, and Grand Prix Spree cuts the Monkey Money cost of Race entries by 10%.
Best Monkey Knowledge to get first
There is no single correct order, but these routes give the most value for the points.
New players and Monkey Money grinders
- Mo' Monkey Money first. It pays for itself across every win and helps fund the Monkey Money fees deeper in the trees.
- Start the Primary tree toward Bonus Monkey! and More Cash. Free early towers and $200 extra starting cash make every map easier, especially on Hard.
- Grab cheap early nodes for the towers you already use, such as Extra Dart Pops or Naval Upgrades.
Hero players
Finish the Heroes tree early: Hero Favors, Self Taught Heroes and Empowered Heroes make your hero cheaper, start higher and level faster.
Economy and farming players
Take Flat Pack Buildings and Farm Subsidy early, then work down to Better Sell Deals, Healthy Bananas and Bank Deposits.
Boss Events, Paragons and freeplay
Paragon of Power makes Paragons attack about 20% faster when no tier 5 of the same tower is on the map, which is huge in Boss Events. Big Bloon Sabotage is close to mandatory for deep freeplay. Add Veteran Monkey Training and Global Ability Cooldowns for a flat boost to everything. See Paragons for how Paragon degrees work.
Knowledge you may want to switch off
Most MK is pure upside, but a few nodes can hurt in specific situations. Toggle them off for that game:
- Big Bloon Sabotage: lower blimp health means your towers deal less total damage, which slightly lowers Paragon degree when you plan to build a Paragon.
- Emergency Unlock: can get in the way of ability hotkeys if your Dartling Gunners are not on normal targeting.
- Cross the Streams and Acid Stability: the extra pools add lag in long freeplay games for little damage.
- Targeted Pineapples: on maps with very short tracks it can reduce how often pineapples drop.
Monkey Knowledge in CHIMPS and challenges
Monkey Knowledge is completely disabled in CHIMPS, including Mo' Monkey Money. That changes many strategies: no free Dart Monkey, no extra starting cash, no cheaper Military towers. When you practise a strategy for a CHIMPS medal, turn all knowledge off with the toggle so the run plays like the real thing.
Daily Challenges, custom challenges and some events can also disable MK through their rules. Everywhere else, including Impoppable, your knowledge is active. Every tower and hero page in this wiki lists the knowledge that affects it. For full challenge solutions, check the BTD6 Master YouTube channel.
Frequently asked questions
When do you unlock Monkey Knowledge in BTD6?
You start earning Knowledge Points at player level 30, one per level except levels 33 and 36. Some achievements and Shop purchases also give points.
How many Monkey Knowledge Points are there?
You can earn 138 points for free through levels and achievements, and each knowledge costs one point, so you can unlock every knowledge without paying.
How do you reset Monkey Knowledge?
Use the respec option in the Monkey Knowledge menu. It costs 2,000 Monkey Money and refunds all points, while Monkey Money already paid for deep knowledge stays paid.
Does Monkey Knowledge work in CHIMPS?
No. All Monkey Knowledge, including Mo' Monkey Money, is disabled in CHIMPS.
What Monkey Knowledge should I get first?
Mo' Monkey Money, then the Primary route to Bonus Monkey! and More Cash. Hero players should also finish the Heroes tree early.
Which tree is the least useful?
The Powers tree, since Powers are consumables you may rarely use. Pre-Game Prep and Grand Prix Spree are its most useful nodes.
Can I turn off a single knowledge?
Yes. You can toggle individual knowledge, or all of it, on and off for free in the MK menu.
