Mana Shield

Mana Shield is a sixth-row Magic knowledge that gives you a shield of 25 extra lives in every game. Leaked bloons drain the shield before your real lives. At the end of each round in which you lost no lives, the shield regains 5 lives, up to the maximum of 25. You need 8 Knowledge Points in the Magic tree, Arcane Impale and a one-time 1,000 Monkey Money. It has nothing below it.

How it changes the game

25 free lives sound small, but they come at exactly the right time:

• Hard and Expert maps: a small early leak no longer costs real lives, so you can greed a little more on economy without panic.
• Recovery: if you leak once and then hold clean rounds, the shield fills back up. A round with any leak gives no recharge.
• Low-life challenges: in modes that start you with very few lives, 25 shield lives can be larger than your whole life total.

Interactions to know:

• Losing shield lives still counts as a leak for tower passives. Bomb Blitz and Elite Defender trigger when the shield takes damage, which pairs well with Master Defender.
• Ezili's Sacrificial Totem takes only real lives and ignores the shield. Heart of Vengeance and the Desperado's Nomad also ignore it.
• Since version 16, the shield needs a full round without leaks before it recharges.

Is it worth it?

Priority: must-have. For general play it is one of the best Magic knowledges, together with Mo' Monkey Money. It protects your runs on Hard maps, and it costs nothing in game.

The cheapest unlock takes 9 points in total: the route Lingering Magic, Hot Magic, Flame Jet, Arcane Impale and Mana Shield, plus enough other Magic points to reach 8 in the tree. Magic Tricks, Speedy Brewing and Mo' Monkey Money are the natural filler. You also pay 250 Monkey Money for Arcane Impale and 1,000 for Mana Shield.

Where it works

Mana Shield works wherever Monkey Knowledge is enabled except Impoppable, where it has been blocked since version 16. It is also off in CHIMPS, like all knowledge, and in challenges that switch knowledge off. For Impoppable, the Powers tree's Pre-Game Prep is a common substitute for leak protection.
