Beginner map
Spa Pits
Info
Spa Pits is a Beginner map added in Version 48.0, alongside the Spike Factory Paragon (Mega Massive Munitions Factory), the MOAB Test Bloon and the Sword of Protection power. It is a relaxing hot spring area of stone paving and round pools of steaming water, ringed by rocks with dark cave openings.
In a normal game, bloons come out of the upper-left cave and loop around the pools one after another: the upper-left pool, the bottom-right pool, the top-most pool, the bottom-left pool, the upper-right pool and finally the upper-left pool again, before disappearing back into the same cave they came from. A central pool sits between them, and the track passes along its edges several times. There is one entrance and one exit in the normal layout, and the track is long, at about 57 RBS.
The pools count as water, so there is a lot of room for Monkey Subs, Buccaneers, Mermonkeys and Admiral Brickell. Land is the scarce resource: the stone areas between the pools are small, so strategies that need many towers packed together, such as Village stacks, Monkeyopolis farming or large Poplust or Shinobi stacks, are harder to set up. Rocks around the edge block line of sight. There is no high ground and there are no removable objects.
Spa Pits hides a secret that turns it into Tar Pits, a nod to the BTD5 map of the same name. Four rocks have claw marks on them, from one to four marks. On the first round, tap them in order of how many marks they have: bottom left (one), top right (two), top (three), bottom right (four). Accept the prompt to make the map harder, and the pools turn to tar (any towers in them are sold), the central path stops being used, and bloons now come from five caves on five very short lanes, each looping one tar pit. Tar Pits gives no extra rewards and is widely considered the hardest map in the game.
How to beat Spa Pits
Map overview for strategy
Normal Spa Pits is one of the easier maps in BTD6, especially with a water strategy. The track is long, it loops around every pool, and the pools are right next to the path. Subs and boats placed in a pool see the bloons circling it, and often other stretches nearby too.
The catch is land. There is not much stone between the pools, so plan your land towers carefully and rely on fewer, stronger towers instead of big stacks. A Monkey Sub at Bloontonium Reactor is highly recommended for removing camo across a wide area.
Tar Pits is a completely different challenge. The lanes are extremely short, five of them run at once, and the best water is gone. If you activate it, a water strategy built around Brickell and Buccaneers, with Subs early, is still the most reliable plan.
Best towers
- Monkey Sub 2-0-4, 4-0-2 (Bloontonium Reactor) and later 5-0-2 (Energizer), 2-5-0 (Pre-emptive Strike) or 2-0-5 (Sub Commander).
- Monkey Buccaneer 3-2-0 / 2-4-0 / 5-0-2 (Carrier Flagship).
- Mermonkey: works in the water and benefits from the pools.
- Ninja Monkey 4-0-1 and 2-0-4 on the stone between pools.
- Alchemist 4-2-0.
- Heli Pilot and Monkey Ace: they work well with an Energizer Sub nearby.
- Ice Monkey placed on water for extra freezing, especially with Silas.
Best heroes
- Admiral Brickell: the obvious choice with so much water.
- Rosalia: placed near the water, she levels up quickly alongside an Energizer.
- Silas: pairs well with Ice Monkeys on the water and an Energizer.
- Quincy: a simple budget option.
Easy and Medium
Start with a Sub in a pool near the start and a Dart Monkey. Add a Ninja for camo, an Alchemist for leads, and a Destroyer. A 2-0-4 Sub and a Destroyer will carry Medium.
Hard
Farm two Banana Farms where land allows. Build Brickell, two 2-0-4 Subs, a 3-2-0 Destroyer and a Ninja with an Alchemist. Add a Bloontonium Reactor for camo and Monkey Pirates for BFBs.
CHIMPS
- Rounds 1 to 6: a Monkey Sub in the first pool and a Dart Monkey, then Brickell as soon as you can afford her.
- Rounds 7 to 18: a second Sub, then a Ninja Monkey on the stone near the start for camo before round 24.
- Rounds 19 to 30: an Alchemist for the round 28 leads. Subs to 2-0-2 or 2-0-3.
- Rounds 31 to 45: a Sub to 2-0-4, Ninja to 4-0-1, Alchemist to 3-2-0. A Buccaneer working towards 3-2-0.
- Rounds 46 to 63: a Sub to 4-0-2 Bloontonium Reactor for decamo, a Destroyer, and a Monkey Pirates boat for round 60.
- Rounds 64 to 80: a Sticky Bomb Ninja, Alchemist to 4-2-0, and more 2-0-4 Subs.
- Rounds 81 to 100: an Energizer (5-0-2) to power your Sub stack, a Sub Commander or Pre-emptive Strike, and a Carrier Flagship. Extra Sticky Bombs and Pirates for 98 and 99.
Impoppable
Follow the CHIMPS naval core and farm in the few open spots. The long track makes Impoppable comfortable.
Other modes
- Military Only: one of the best maps for it, with so much water.
- Deflation: Subs and a Destroyer give strong value.
- Half Cash: cheap Subs make the early game easy.
Dangerous rounds on this map
- Round 24: one camo green. Subs need a Ninja, a radar or a Bloontonium Reactor.
- Round 28: six leads.
- Round 40: the first MOAB. A 2-0-3 Sub and Brickell handle it.
- Round 63: 122 dense ceramics. Add pierce on land or with a Destroyer.
- Round 76: 60 regrow ceramics. The long track gives them time to heal if they slip past.
- Round 78: camo ceramics and purples. Purples resist fire, energy and plasma.
- Round 95: camo regrow purples and fortified leads, then MOABs and DDTs.
- Round 98: 30 fortified BFBs and 8 ZOMGs. Monkey Pirates, Sub damage and Sticky Bombs.
- Round 99: 60 MOABs and 9 fortified DDTs.
- Round 100: one BAD that ignores slows.

Frequently asked questions
How do you unlock Tar Pits on Spa Pits?
On the first round, tap the four clawed rocks in order of claw marks: bottom left, top right, top, bottom right. Accept the prompt and the map becomes Tar Pits.
Does Tar Pits give more rewards?
No. It gives the same rewards as normal Spa Pits, just a much harder challenge.
What is the best hero for Spa Pits?
Admiral Brickell, thanks to the many pools. Rosalia and Silas are good alternatives with an Energizer.
How do you beat Spa Pits CHIMPS?
Build a naval defense: several Subs, Brickell, a Destroyer, Monkey Pirates and a Bloontonium Reactor for camo, with a Ninja and Alchemist on land. Finish with an Energizer, Sub Commander or Carrier Flagship.
How much Monkey Money does Spa Pits give?
First-time medals pay 75, 125, 200 and 300 Monkey Money for the Easy, Medium, Hard and Impoppable/CHIMPS tiers. Replays pay one fifth.
Is Spa Pits good for Monkeyopolis farming?
Not really. The land between the pools is small, so it is hard to pack enough towers around a Village. Water strategies make far better use of the map.
