Boss bloon
Phayze
Info
Phayze, the Reality Warper, is the fifth Boss Bloon in BTD6 and the most evasive one. It is a Camo boss wrapped in a Reality Shield, it periodically jams camo detection across the map, drags bloons forward to itself, and teleports up the track at every skull, leaving a portal that becomes a new spawn point.
- Type: Boss Bloon (counts as MOAB-class)
- Where you fight it: weekly Boss Events (rank 20+), the Boss Challenge menu, Boss Rush, and boss tiles in Contested Territory (Normal tiers 1 and 2)
- Speed: very slow without its shield (3.6% of a Red Bloon); the Reality Shield speeds it up by 30% at tier 1 up to 50% at tier 5 (45% to 65% on Elite)
- Skulls: 3 on Normal, 5 on Elite
- Properties: natural Camo; immune to decamo while Radar Jam is active
- Other immunities: stuns, slows, knockback, instant kills and percentage damage, like every boss
Health per tier
Tier 1 spawns on round 40 and a stronger tier comes every 20 rounds (60, 80, 100, 120). The numbers below do not include the Reality Shield, which has a quarter of Phayze's health and comes back at every skull.
- Tier 1: 9,500 (Elite 19,000)
- Tier 2: 35,000 (Elite 110,000)
- Tier 3: 160,000 (Elite 700,000)
- Tier 4: 350,000 (Elite 3,100,000)
- Tier 5: 1,450,000 (Elite 15,500,000)
Each extra co-op player adds 20% health, up to +60%.
Abilities
- Reality Shield: must be destroyed before Phayze takes damage. While it is up, Phayze moves faster.
- Radar Jam: every 24 seconds, for 12 seconds, Phayze disables camo detection that towers receive from other sources (Village Radar Scanner, buffs and similar). Towers with their own camo detection are not affected. Radar Jam also restores Phayze's camo, pulls active bloons (up to large blimps, but never BADs) to its position at 600% speed and gives nearby bloons the camo property. Higher tiers affect bigger bloons, up to Fortified MOABs and DDTs on Normal tier 5 and Fortified ZOMGs on Elite tier 5.
- Warp: at each skull Phayze rebuilds its shield and teleports 8% of the track forward. It is invulnerable while warping and clears on-track projectiles such as spikes on its way. A portal opens where it was, and all new bloons spawn from that portal until Phayze dies.
- Attack slow aura: each skull slows the attack speed of towers around Phayze. On Normal the slow is x1.1, x1.15 and x1.2 attack cooldown for the three skulls. On Elite it scales with tier, up to x2.2 cooldown (less than half attack speed) at the last skull of tier 5. Ability cooldowns are not affected.
How to pop Phayze
Phayze attacks your defense's blind spots. It turns off borrowed camo detection, gives nearby bloons camo, pulls them forward, and then moves the spawn point up the track every time you break a skull. A defense that relies on one Radar Scanner Village and one kill zone can collapse in a single Radar Jam. A defense built from towers with their own camo detection, spread along the track, stays steady.
Why Phayze is dangerous
- Camo that keeps coming back. Decamo only works between Radar Jams, and the jam restores Phayze's camo every 24 seconds.
- Borrowed camo detection gets switched off. Radar Scanner and other granted camo detection stop working for 12 seconds at a time.
- Bloons get camo and teleport forward. During Radar Jam, nearby bloons gain camo and active bloons are dragged to Phayze at six times normal speed.
- The spawn point moves. Each skull warps Phayze forward and opens a portal, so later bloons skip the start of your track.
- Your towers slow down. The skull aura raises attack cooldowns, up to more than double on Elite tier 5.
- Shield first. Every skull gives Phayze a fresh Reality Shield worth a quarter of its health.
Damage sources that work
- Towers with their own camo detection. Sniper Monkeys with Night Vision Goggles, Ninja Monkeys, Super Monkeys with Ultravision, Monkey Aces with Spy Plane, and most Paragons.
- Extra damage to camo bloons: Night Vision Goggles, Spy Plane, Ultravision and the Ascended Shadow all deal bonus damage to camo targets, which includes Phayze.
- Abilities and burst damage. Phayze's slow aura does not touch ability cooldowns, so Final Strike, Carpet Bomb and Mega Sentry explosions keep full power.
- Long range. Towers that can follow Phayze after it warps keep dealing damage when fixed kill zones are left behind.
- What does not work: stuns, slows, knockback, percentage damage, and camo detection that comes only from support towers.
Best towers and setups
Tiers 1 and 2
- Elite Defender (Sniper Monkey): map-wide, so warps do not matter. The 0-2-5 crosspath gives its own camo detection and bonus camo damage and outdamages 2-0-5 against Phayze.
- Ninja Monkeys such as Grandmaster Ninja and Master Bomber have native camo detection.
- Super Monkeys with Ultravision (x-x-2) for camo, range and camo bonus damage.
- Spike Storm works if you time its ability, because Phayze's warp deletes spikes already on the track.
Tiers 3 to 5
- Paragons deal extra boss damage and most have camo detection. The Ascended Shadow is especially strong because it deals extra damage to camo.
- Ascended Shadow support can give camo detection to Paragons that lack it, such as Crucible of Steel and Flame and the Ballistic Obliteration Missile Bunker.
- Several damage clusters along the track so each warp lands Phayze in range of something new.
Heroes that help
- Heroes with natural camo detection are a safe pick, because Radar Jam cannot remove it.
- Benjamin for income, so you can afford native-camo towers rather than relying on a Radar Scanner.
Powers and Monkey Knowledge
- Camo Trap helps against the camo bloons, but Radar Jam can re-camo bloons and Phayze itself is immune to decamo during the jam.
- Monkey Boost offsets Phayze's attack speed slow for a few seconds after a skull.
- MOAB Mine helps with blimps that Radar Jam pulls forward.
Tier-by-tier plan
- Early rounds: build your core defense from towers with their own camo detection. Avoid a single Radar Scanner as your only camo source.
- Tier 1 (round 40): break the shield, then the boss. Expect Ceramics to turn camo near Phayze during Radar Jam.
- Tier 2 (round 60): Radar Jam can now camo Fortified Ceramics on Normal and Fortified MOABs on Elite. Add camo-capable blimp damage.
- Tier 3 (round 80): move boss damage to Paragons or tier 5 native-camo towers, and spread defenses along the track.
- Tiers 4 and 5: Radar Jam affects DDTs and bigger blimps. After every skull, adjust targeting and manual aim for the new spawn portal.
Normal vs Elite
- Normal has 3 skulls and a fixed slow aura (x1.1 to x1.2 attack cooldown).
- Elite has 5 skulls, a faster shielded speed, larger shields, and a slow aura that grows with tier, down to less than half attack speed at the last skull of tier 5. Radar Jam affects bigger bloons at every tier, reaching Fortified ZOMGs at tier 5.
Counters to each ability
- Reality Shield: treat it as extra health; it is a quarter of Phayze's health at every skull.
- Radar Jam: use native camo detection. Use the camo-priority targeting option set to Strong to make towers focus Phayze.
- Warp and portals: do not rely on one kill zone. Re-check targeting, manual aim and tower placement after each skull.
- Slow aura: lean on abilities and keep important towers a bit away from the spot where Phayze reaches its skulls.
Common mistakes
- Using a Radar Scanner Village as the only camo source.
- Building all defense at the start of the track and losing it to the first portal.
- Placing spikes in front of Phayze right before a skull; the warp deletes them.
- Expecting decamo to stick on Phayze.
Frequently asked questions
How much health does Phayze have?
Normal Phayze has 9,500, 35,000, 160,000, 350,000 and 1,450,000 health for tiers 1 to 5, plus a Reality Shield worth a quarter of that at every skull. Elite Phayze has 19,000, 110,000, 700,000, 3,100,000 and 15,500,000.
What does Phayze's Radar Jam do?
Every 24 seconds, for 12 seconds, it turns off camo detection that towers get from other sources, restores Phayze's camo, pulls bloons to Phayze and gives nearby bloons camo.
What is the best tower against Phayze?
Towers with their own camo detection and long range. A 0-2-5 Elite Defender is a top pick early, and Paragons, especially the Ascended Shadow, are best later.
Does Monkey Village camo detection work against Phayze?
Only between Radar Jams. For 12 seconds of every 24, granted camo detection is disabled, so do not rely on it.
Why do bloons spawn in the middle of the map against Phayze?
Every time Phayze reaches a skull it warps forward and leaves a portal. New bloons spawn from that portal until Phayze is defeated.
Does Phayze slow down abilities?
No. Its slow aura only increases attack cooldowns, so activated abilities keep their normal cooldowns.
