BTD6 Update 49: Desperado, Sunset Gulch and Tower Snapping

Official BTD6 Update 49 artwork featuring the new Desperado gunslinger tower and the desert canyon setting of the Sunset Gulch map

BTD6 Update 49 (version 49.0) went live on Steam, Windows and macOS on 18 June 2025, with the Epic Games Store and Apple Arcade builds following on 19 June. It was the third major update of 2025, and it is the one that added a brand-new primary tower to the game.

The headline additions:

  • Desperado, a new Primary tower with a pistol, a long-range rifle and a close-range shotgun spread across its three paths.
  • Sunset Gulch, a new Advanced map where MOAB-class Bloons ride a railroad that is separate from the regular Bloon track.
  • Tower Placement Snapping, a new option in the accessibility menu.
  • One Hero Solution, a challenge quest where you beat the Rogue Legends rounds with a One Monkey Army.

On top of that, v49.0 carried a long balance list: a cheaper Ice Monkey that can now sit on water, a halved Glue Storm, a slower Bomb Blitz, a Mermonkey price cut, a long list of Corvus number changes, and easier Dreadbloon and Lych fights. Three patches (49.1 to 49.3) followed within about two weeks, mostly fixing Desperado bugs.

New tower: the Desperado

The Desperado, the new Primary tower added in BTD6 Update 49, wearing a cowboy hat and holding a pistol
The Desperado, BTD6’s newest Primary tower

The Desperado is a gunslinger Monkey. It costs $300 on Medium and sits in the Primary category next to the Dart Monkey and Boomerang Monkey.

The base tower fires a pistol in two-shot bursts (0.1s between shots, 1.2s cooldown) for 1 sharp damage and 1 pierce, with 60 range. That is weak damage, but the range and accurate targeting make it a real early-game option. It cannot see Camo until you buy the first middle-path upgrade.

What makes the Desperado different is that each path hands it a different gun. The top path keeps the pistol and turns it into revolvers, the middle path adds a long-range rifle, and the bottom path adds a short-range shotgun. Several upgrades also change attack speed based on the situation: how far the target is, how many Bloons are in range, or how many other Monkeys are nearby.

How to unlock the Desperado

The Desperado unlocks for free once your account has popped 3,500,000 Bloons. If you want it right away, the premium Desperado pack unlocks it with all upgrades through tier 5, plus an avatar, a banner and a Cowboy Hat Bloon trophy item.

Top path: Quickdraw to The Blazing Sun

The Blazing Sun, the 5-0-0 Desperado upgrade with flaming twin revolvers
The Blazing Sun (5-0-0)

The top path is the single-target path. Quickdraw gives up to +50% attack speed against distant targets, and Standoff adds +60% attack speed when only 0 or 1 Bloons are in range, losing 15% for each extra Bloon. That combination rewards placing the Desperado where it picks off strays rather than staring down a crowd.

Big Iron turns the pistol into a 6-shot revolver at 2 damage per shot. Twin Sixes doubles up to two revolvers firing 12-shot bursts. At launch the burst interval was slower than intended; the fix to 0.05s came in 49.2.

The Blazing Sun drops the cooldown between bursts to 0.3s and fires 20-damage shots with a +40 bonus against Ceramics. It counts its shots while attacking without a break, gets faster as the counter climbs, and once the counter is high enough each shot creates a small fire area that sets Bloons burning. A full 5-1-0 costs about $24,350 at current prices, which makes it a cheap tier 5, and it is strong against single high-health targets and tier 1 Boss Bloons. It does not handle dense groups, so it needs cleanup next to it. 5-2-0 is the crosspath to buy, and it gets even better next to a Bounty Hunter’s marks and Take Aim.

Middle path: Eagle Eye to Golden Justice

Golden Justice, the 0-5-0 Desperado upgrade with a golden long rifle
Golden Justice (0-5-0)

The middle path is the rifle and support path. Eagle Eye is a cheap $150 for Camo detection, which is the main reason so many Desperado crosspaths take at least one middle tier. Bullseye gives every shot a chance to crit for x4 damage, starting at 2.5% and rising with the distance to the target.

Deadeye is where the path gets interesting. It adds a rifle with 80 range that can pop every Bloon type, including Lead, and deals bonus damage to Fortified Bloons. It also gives the Desperado its first ability, Take Aim: pick another Monkey and it gets +25% range, half the projectile spread and Camo detection for 15 seconds, on a 30-second cooldown. That makes Deadeye a support tower as much as a damage tower. Inaccurate towers such as Buckshot or Grape Shot Buccaneers benefit the most.

Bounty Hunter adds Marked to Pop (45-second cooldown). The Desperado marks up to 10 extra Bloons, then rapidly fires at every marked Bloon with infinite range. Marked Bloons take double damage from all Desperados and give twice the cash when popped, so one Bounty Hunter boosts every other Desperado you own. Take Aim also improves at this tier, letting the targeted Monkey pop Purple, Black and White Bloons for the duration.

Golden Justice turns the rifle into a slow, huge hit with effectively unlimited pierce, so every shot goes through everything in a line. It shines on long, straight sections of track against high-health Bloons. The weakness is the slow fire rate: fast targets like DDTs and Super Ceramics can slip through, so it needs cleanup.

For crosspaths, 2-3-0, 2-4-0 and 2-5-0 are the usual picks: Quickdraw rewards the rifle’s long range and Standoff helps single-target damage. Use 0-x-2 instead if groups of Bloons entering range are the bigger problem, since Nomad speeds up with every Bloon in range.

Bottom path: Wanderer to The Desert Phantom

The Desert Phantom, the 0-0-5 Desperado upgrade with a blunderbuss shotgun
The Desert Phantom (0-0-5)

The bottom path is crowd control at short range. Wanderer makes the Desperado attack much faster when no other Monkeys are in its range, with the bonus shrinking for each Monkey nearby. That makes placement a puzzle: a Wanderer wants space, so it works best at the edge of a Monkey Village’s range rather than in the middle of a tower cluster.

Nomad flips the top path’s logic and attacks faster the more Bloons are in range. When you lose lives it also gets a temporary range and attack speed boost, and grants a little cash if a Bloon leaked. Enforcer adds the shotgun: three pellets in a 35° spread that knock Bloons back when they get close.

Avenger makes shotgun hits release shrapnel and lets the knockback push MOABs. Its life-loss effect is unusual: after you lose lives, Bloons up to Rainbow cost only 1 life each when they leak, for 15 seconds. Treat it as a mid-game safety net, not a plan.

The Desert Phantom hits much harder, knocks Bloons back further, and its shrapnel burns. When a Bloon that was hit by shrapnel pops shortly afterwards, it explodes and damages Bloons nearby; that is the “mine blast” in the description. It is strong against groups and easy to use on straight tracks, but it struggles against DDTs and on most Expert maps where it cannot keep Bloons inside shotgun range. 2-0-5 is the preferred crosspath for general damage. Take 0-2-5 if you have no other Camo detection.

Where the Desperado fits

The base tower is a good early pick even on Hard maps. Two Desperados, or a Dart Monkey plus a Desperado, are workable CHIMPS openers thanks to the range and accurate targeting. On Strong or First targeting they chip the toughest Bloons and snipe strays. They can also act as spotters for an Advanced Intel Monkey Sub.

Quick take: Top path for single-target and bosses (5-2-0), middle path for long-range damage and support through Take Aim and Bounty Hunter marks (2-x-0), bottom path for crowd control on straight tracks (2-0-5 or 0-2-5).

New map: Sunset Gulch (Advanced)

Sunset Gulch, the Advanced BTD6 map from Update 49, with a railroad bridge across a desert canyon
Sunset Gulch, an Advanced map added in v49.0

Sunset Gulch is the new Advanced map and was built to show off the Desperado. A trainline north of the road is under attack, and you defend a canyon crossing and the valley below it.

  • Two separate tracks. Regular Bloons enter at the lower left, cross a bridge from left to right and exit at the lower right. MOAB-class Bloons and Boss Bloons only use the railroad, which runs from the top left to the top right. A bell rings when MOABs start coming out.
  • The MOAB lane is short. On Medium the Bloon track is 22.2 units of path length against 11.9 for the railroad, so blimps reach the exit in roughly half the distance.
  • Limited placement in the valley. Towers go on the two cliffs. The valley floor does not allow towers with a footprint except on two raised rocks: the top rock fits large towers such as a Spike Factory, and the bottom one fits extra-large towers such as a Super Monkey.
  • No water, so no water towers. Cacti block some placement and a little line of sight.

Because the exits are split and the middle is hard to cover, the common approach is to build near the end of the map and treat it like a short single-lane map with a dedicated answer for the MOAB railroad. Use the left side early and develop the right later. Towers that do well here include The Desert Phantom and Golden Justice (both like the long, straight MOAB lane), Perma-Spike for late cleanup, and The Bloon Solver against Super Ceramics near the MOAB lane. For a full round-by-round plan, see our Sunset Gulch CHIMPS guide.

Tower Placement Snapping

Version 49.0 added Tower Placement Snapping as a setting in the in-game accessibility menu. The patch notes do not go into more detail. A related fix in 49.2 made the Tower Range Circle accessibility settings save correctly.

Balance changes in v49.0

Ninja Kiwi spread this patch’s changes across most of the roster. The big themes: cheaper Ice Monkey and Mermonkey, nerfs to Glue Storm and Bomb Blitz, a Monkey Ace cost reshuffle, and many Corvus number changes. All costs are Medium.

Tack Shooter

UpgradeChangeType
Blade Maelstrom (x-4-x)Main blade damage 1 → 2Buff
Super Maelstrom (x-5-x)Main blade damage 2 → 5Buff
ParagonMeteor Impact ability cooldown 90s → 60sBuff

Super Maelstrom’s main blades now deal 2.5 times their old damage, so the Tack Shooter middle path hits much harder than before.

Embrittlement (4-x-x)Cost $2,200 → $2,300Nerf

The Ice Monkey placing on water is the big one. On water-heavy maps it no longer has to take up land space. Early tiers got cheaper while the mid-game tier 3s went up a little, and Absolute Zero dropped by $3,200.

Glue Gunner

UpgradeChangeType
Glue Storm (x-5-0)Ability glue duration 22s → 11sNerf

An early top-path Monkey Ace is now $300 cheaper through tier 2. Tsar Bomba got $4,000 cheaper, but each bomb now hits for 20 instead of 25 (the Ceramic bonus rose from +8 to +10) and deals Explosion damage.

Heli Pilot

Rosalia Lv10Kinetic Charge drone projectile lasts one round end or 60sChange
Striker Jones Lv5Mortars can set Black and Zebra Bloons on fireFix

Corvus earns Mana faster but most of his damage spells hit noticeably softer, with Overload losing almost 40%. Etienne at $650 is now an easier early pick, while Adora‘s level 20 lost some of its edge. The Striker Jones fix and the Rosalia change are small.

Bosses and Time Stop

UpgradeChangeType
Dreadbloon: Rock BloonsSpeed 22 → 18Nerf
Dreadbloon: Normal Rock Bloon healthT1–T5 300/600/900/9,000/22,500 → 250/500/750/8,000/20,000Nerf

Lych SoulSpeed 25 → 23Nerf
BlastapopoulosSpeed at T2–T5 1 → 1.05/1.1/1.15/1.25Buff
Time Stop (power)Bloon slow 90% → 70%, tower slow 40% → 30%Nerf

Ninja Kiwi said Dreadbloon‘s difficulty came too much from its Rock Bloons, so those are slower and weaker while the boss itself moves a little faster at higher tiers. Lych is slower across the board and Blastapopoulos is faster from tier 2. The Time Stop power now slows Bloons less but also hurts your own towers less.

Quests, cosmetics and Rogue Legends

New quests

  • One Hero Solution (challenge): beat the Rogue Legends rounds with a One Monkey Army, using any hero.
  • The Tale of Desperado: a Tales quest that introduces the new tower.
  • How To Do Voodoo!: a new tutorial quest.

The patch notes also list an Ezili Hero Trial and a Desperado Trial among the new quests.

Patch 49.2 made the Desperado usable in most non-tutorial quests and removed the Ice Monkey from Raft Defense, since Ice Monkeys can now be placed on water.

Trophy Store items

The Trophy Store added a Bomb Shooter Fireworks projectile swap, a Cowboy Hat Bloon decal, the Tinkerfairy avatar and the Enchanted Glade profile banner.

Rogue Legends changes

  • Two new Artifacts: What In Tarnation!, built around the Desperado, and Heroic Specialty, which gives every hero a tower class.
  • The Rogue XP Store now has a respec option.
  • Final Boss health roughly doubled from stage 3 up (Bloonarius stage 2 went from 50,000 to 80,000 and stage 3 from 90,000 to 180,000). Mini Boss base health dropped from 300 to 200.
  • Least Cash tiles are always 10 rounds long and grant a Boost every round.
  • Tower placement hotkeys cycle between different Insta-Monkeys of the same tower, party members can be removed before the team is full, and stage bosses play their own music.
  • Artifact tweaks: Dream Teams placement cooldown reductions went from 1/2/3 to 1/1/2 rounds, the Essence Artifacts now work from tier 4 towers and level 15 heroes, and Explosive Economics and Swiftest to Business now also cut placement cooldowns for more towers.

Several starting parties were also reshuffled, including new starting Artifacts for Quincy (Heroic Specialty) and Dread Pirate Brickell (What In Tarnation!). Profile stats are now split between Rogue Legends and the base game.

Notable bug fixes

  • Boss Rush: Castle Revenge and Balance no longer reset the boss’s position.
  • Fractional pierce on sub-projectiles is now calculated correctly.
  • Spikeageddon no longer spawns fewer mines on short tracks.
  • Ballistic Missile no longer ignores line-of-sight blockers (this was reverted in 49.3).
  • Spikes from a sold Mega Massive Munitions Factory no longer ignore Dreadbloon’s support immunity.
  • Ranked events: toggling Ranked on and off no longer leaves Powers, Fast Track or Double Cash in the wrong state.
  • Map Editor: no more crash when entering a map before its preview loads.
  • Spillway line-of-sight issues and Ravine track items showing above Bloons are fixed.
  • Fixed a softlock when placing Geraldo, priming another tower and pressing the hero hotkey.
  • Rogue Legends: the Discord Artifact no longer crashes when MOAB Takedown grabs Dreadrock Bloons, and the No Rerolls plus Choice Starved curse softlock is gone.
  • Epic version: fixed a startup crash.

Patches after v49.0

v49.1 (24 June 2025)

  • Nomad’s attack speed scaling with Bloons in range now works properly, and its leak cash bonus only applies when a Bloon actually leaked.
  • Fixed the Vengeful True Sun God reverting to a regular True Sun God after reloading a game, and Spikeageddon continuing to launch mines on Dark Castle.
  • Fixed Kinetic Charge at level 13+, which had stopped working entirely.
  • Fixed a common crash when returning to the main menu while the game was saving, plus a Corvus crash.

v49.2 (26 June 2025)

  • Twin Sixes burst interval fixed from 0.1s to 0.05s, so the top path finally fired as fast as intended. This carries up to The Blazing Sun.
  • Bounty Hunter crosspath bugs fixed: the crosspathed Execution attack dropped from 100 to 30 damage and from 3s to 1s, marks stopped affecting all layers, and Marked to Pop no longer soaks through MOAB layers.
  • Golden Justice’s Take Aim no longer gives Advanced Intel subs infinite range.
  • Nomad leak cash no longer stacks per Desperado, and the Desperado no longer gets Camo prioritization from outside Camo detection.
  • Paragon sub-towers are now stunned with the main tower, and the Engineer Paragon’s new ability effect persists through saves.
  • New accounts can unlock all towers again, and an iOS crash was fixed.

v49.3 (3 July 2025)

UpgradeChangeType
Golden Justice (x-5-x)Crit damage multiplier x4 → x8Buff
Deadeye crosspaths (0-3-1, 0-3-2, 1-3-0, 2-3-0)Take Aim range bonus +15% → +25%, spread +50% → -50%Fix
Deadeye (x-3-x) and aboveTake Aim now also applies to sub-towersBuff
Avenger + top crosspath (1-0-4, 2-0-4)Shotgun pierce 1 → 3Fix
Ballistic Missile (x-3-x) and aboveCan fire over walls againFix

Before 49.3, crosspathed Deadeyes were actually making their Take Aim target less accurate. If you wrote off Take Aim in the first two weeks, try it again: the doubled Golden Justice crits and the working spread bonus changed how the middle path plays.

What Update 49 means for your games

  • Try a Desperado opener. At $300 with 60 range and reliable targeting, one or two Desperados are a valid early start, and Eagle Eye gives Camo detection for $150.
  • Use Deadeye as support. Take Aim adds range, accuracy and Camo detection to an inaccurate tower, and a Bounty Hunter’s marks double damage from every Desperado and double the cash from marked Bloons.
  • Water maps got easier to slow. The Ice Monkey can sit on water and costs $100 less, and Absolute Zero is $3,200 cheaper.
  • Do not rely on Glue Storm or Bomb Blitz alone. Glue Storm and MOAB Glue last half as long and Bomb Storm comes up every 60s instead of 40s, so plan backup control for late MOAB rounds.
  • Cheap Mermonkey and Etienne starts. The Mermonkey’s early tiers are much cheaper and Etienne costs $650, which helps on maps where you need early value.
  • Dreadbloon is more forgiving. Its Rock Bloons are slower and have less health, so a defense that used to leak rocks may now hold.

Biggest winners: the Desperado (new), Ice Monkey, Mermonkey, Super Maelstrom and Downdraft. Biggest losers: Glue Storm, Bomb Blitz, Cripple MOAB, Rubber to Gold and Corvus’s damage spells.

Is the Desperado a tower or a hero?

The Desperado is a regular Primary tower with three upgrade paths, not a hero or a Paragon. It costs $300 on Medium.

How do you unlock the Desperado in BTD6?

It unlocks for free after your account pops 3,500,000 Bloons. You can also buy the premium Desperado pack, which unlocks every upgrade through tier 5 and adds an avatar, a banner and a Cowboy Hat Bloon trophy item.

What difficulty is Sunset Gulch?

Sunset Gulch is an Advanced map. It has two entrances and two exits: regular Bloons use the lower road and bridge, while MOAB-class Bloons and bosses ride a shorter railroad along the top.

What was the next update after BTD6 49?

Version 50.0 arrived on 27 August 2025 with the hero Silas, the Intermediate map Lost Crevasse and the Powers Pro system. It also buffed several Desperado upgrades and cut the cost of Quickdraw, Bullseye, Twin Sixes and Bounty Hunter.
