BTD6 Update 52: Frontier Legends DLC & Herald of Everfrost

Bloons TD 6 Update 52 artwork for Frontier Legends, the Herald of Everfrost Ice Monkey Paragon and the Tricky Tracks Expert map

BTD6 Update 52 (version 52.0) came out on PC on 3 December 2025 on Steam and the Epic Games Store. It was the sixth and final major update of 2025, and it is one of the largest in the game’s history, mostly because of what you can buy alongside it.

Four things define this update:

  • Frontier Legends, a paid Western-themed story DLC. You play as the new Sheriff of Sandytown and face six new bloon types and a new boss called Diamondback.
  • Herald of Everfrost, the long-awaited Paragon for the Ice Monkey. It is a support paragon built around freezing, a damage debuff and skipping boss skulls.
  • Tricky Tracks, a new Expert map set in a train station. It has six separate lanes and paid trains you can send down the tracks.
  • A large balance pass. The Mermonkey gets cheaper and the Desperado shotgun path gets stronger. Three paragons and several heroes are nerfed, and Fire and Plasma are split into separate damage types.

This page covers each of them in detail, every balance change with numbers, and the two follow-up patches, 52.1 and 52.2.

Frontier Legends: the paid Western DLC

Recruiting Monkeys for your posse is the core loop of Frontier Legends

Frontier Legends is the second Legends expansion, after Rogue Legends. It began life as “Desperado Legends”. When Ninja Kiwi reworked the project, the Desperado tower was released early in Update 49 and the expansion moved to December 2025.

You play as the new Sheriff of Sandytown, a small desert town under threat from Wild Bloons and from Diamondback, the story’s main villain. It is a linear story told across a semi-open world made of hexagonal tiles. Sandytown is the hub, connected to 39 areas you can explore freely. Along the way there are minigames, fishing, a day and night cycle you control at Campfires, and town upgrades.

How much does Frontier Legends cost?

The official price is US$12.99, sold as an in-app purchase or Steam DLC. Prices vary by platform and region, and Steam has already discounted it at times. Buying it also unlocks an exclusive avatar, a profile banner and a Desperado pet, plus Monkey Names in the Trophy Store. Finishing the story adds a second banner and avatar.

If you are not sure yet, play the free Frontier Legends Preview Tale Quest first. It unlocks at player Level 5 and covers the opening of the story, up to the moment the Sheriff earns his badge. Preview progress is not saved, and it does not count toward Frontier Feats.

How Frontier Legends plays

Battles are Medium Apopalypse games with their own round set, and only the Sheriff and your active Posse can be placed. There is no selling. You can retreat a tower, but it costs Stamina. Between fights you manage three resources:

  • Bananite is the currency, used to recruit, upgrade and buy items. You start with 500.
  • Stamina is spent when you place towers and on every round. Resting, Banana Cookies and fishing restore it.
  • Lives carry across fights, up to 200. Items and resting restore them.

Your army is the Posse: up to six members, plus the Sheriff. You recruit Ranch Hands at the Saloon for Bananite. Each one rolls one to three traits that change how it plays. The stock refreshes every hour, or sooner if you pay. Rare Legendary Recruits are stronger and cost more. Heroes can be hired too, but each one needs a Deputy Badge, which caps how many you can bring. Upgrades to Ranch Hands and heroes are permanent, so the campaign has real RPG-style progression.

The Sheriff is a tower of his own. His attacks come from his gear, which has head, body and weapon slots. He starts with the Basic Pistol and later finds options like the Returning Pistolarang, Sticky Dynamite and the Marshmallow Stick, which sets bloons on fire. His signature ability, Giddy Up, is a toggle that doubles the attack speed of the Sheriff and every Monkey in his range. While it is on, Morale drains at 4% per second and each Posse member uses one extra Stamina per round.

In Sandytown, the Sheriff’s Homestead is where you change gear and pets and manage the Posse, and it restores lives and Stamina faster than a Campfire. Geraldo runs the General Store, which sells town upgrades, consumables, Sheriff upgrades and hero cooldown reductions.

Out on the map, Roaming Bloons wander around wearing cowboy hats. Some chase you and some run away. When you touch one, you can let it go, run (and lose Bananite and Stamina), distract it with a Fake Wallet, or fight it in Quick Draw. Quick Draw is a timing minigame where you fire as a sweeping reticle lines up with targets, with six shots before a reload. Winning pays out Bananite and items. Losing costs Lives and Stamina.

The six new bloons

BloonHealthSpecial mechanicChildren
Dynamite30Below 10 health it starts a 3s fuse. If it isn’t popped in time, it explodes in a 35-unit radius and stuns nearby towers for 6s. Takes +1 damage from Fire and Explosion.2 Black, 3 Regrow Red
Glass20Immune to Energy, Plasma and Acid, and reflects projectiles it is immune toZebra, Camo Zebra, Regrow Zebra
Diamond–Takes only 1 damage per hit–
Aura40Speeds up bloons within 40 units by 1.35x3 each of Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, Pink
Retribution100Every 5 hits it stuns the attacker for 1.5s. The tower that pops it is stunned for 6s.4 Yellow, 2 Purple
Ringleader30A 50-unit barrier with 80 HP blocks projectiles and caps the speed of bloons inside at 30 units/s. The barrier regrows 6s after it breaks.3 Rainbow

Each one punishes a different kind of tower. Diamond Bloons make high-damage single shots weak and favour fast attackers. Retribution Bloons punish slow towers that hit often, because every five hits means a stun. Ringleaders turn pierce-based towers off until the barrier breaks. Glass Bloons shut down Plasma and Energy towers.

Diamondback, the Village Devourer

Portrait of Diamondback, the multi-segment snake boss bloon from Frontier Legends
Diamondback, the Frontier Legends boss

Diamondback is a snake-like boss with a head, a tail and five body segments (seven on Elite), all sharing one health bar. Its head cuts the pierce of any projectile that hits it, and the body segments cut it slightly less. Breaking the shield on its Rattle Tail stuns it for 12 seconds and doubles the damage it takes until the shield comes back 60 seconds later. It also scatters bloons along the track for every 1% of health it loses.

At each skull, it rebuilds the tail shield, sends a larger wave (often Diamond Bloons), sheds a middle segment and becomes invulnerable for 3 seconds. Tier 1 has 20,000 health and Tier 5 has 3,800,000 on Normal. Elite runs from 95,000 to 65 million. At launch it only appeared in Frontier Legends. It joined Boss Events and Boss Rush later, in Update 54.

Quick take: Frontier Legends is a separate game mode with its own economy, not new content for your normal games. If you mostly play CHIMPS, races and boss events, the free part of Update 52 (Herald of Everfrost, Tricky Tracks and the balance changes) is what affects you. Play the free Preview quest before you decide on the US$12.99.

Herald of Everfrost: the Ice Monkey Paragon

Herald of Everfrost, the Ice Monkey Paragon in BTD6, surrounded by ice and frost
Herald of Everfrost, added in Update 52

Herald of Everfrost finally gives the Ice Monkey a paragon. Ninja Kiwi teased it on 30 November 2025, a few days before release. Like every paragon, it costs XP to unlock and needs a tier 5 from each path. It is one of the cheaper paragons to buy.

DifficultyParagon cost
Easy$255,000
Medium$300,000
Hard$324,000
Impoppable$360,000
XP to unlock750,000

On Medium, buying every required upgrade plus the paragon comes to $395,950. It has a 46-unit range, can be placed on land or water, and attacks every 4 seconds with First, Last, Close or Strong targeting.

Attacks

  • Ice Lance Beam (four out of every five attacks): a straight beam that deals 600 damage (+6,000 to Bosses) with 500 pierce and ignores line-of-sight blockers. It freezes for 10s, including MOAB-class bloons (but not BADs or Bosses), and deals another 600 damage to anything it can’t freeze. It leaves icicles behind and throws out bursts of ice shards (25 damage each, +50 to MOAB-class, +125 to Bosses).
  • Snowstorm Roar (every fifth attack): a map-wide blast that needs a target in range. It freezes bloons for 10s (5s on MOAB-class) and applies Permafrost (half speed, 0.75x for MOAB-class). It removes Camo, Regrow and Lead/Frozen immunities. It also applies a 10-second debuff: +8 damage from every attack, and +40 from cold attacks. BADs and Bosses receive the debuff but are not slowed, and it cools Blastapopoulos by 6,000 heat.
  • Arctic Wind aura: within its range, regular bloons move at 10% speed and MOAB-class at 55%.
  • Ice platforms: when the Herald is created, all water on the map freezes over and land towers can be placed on it. If you sell the Herald, land towers on water without other ice support are sold with it.

Eclipse of Fimbulwinter and skull skipping

The activated ability is the reason to build this paragon in boss content. Eclipse of Fimbulwinter has a 90-second cooldown and can only be used once per round. It lasts 25 seconds: a global slow, then after a 5-second delay a freeze on everything, including BADs and Bosses for 5 seconds. It fully resets Blastapopoulos’s heat.

Most importantly, if a Boss reaches a skull while the ability is active, the skull is negated. This works once per boss tier. It also stops boss gimmicks during the freeze. Dreadbloon stops spawning rocks, Phayze can’t warp, Lych gets no soul phase, and Diamondback doesn’t spawn bloons.

What it is good and bad at

Treat the Herald as a support paragon, not a damage carry. Its value is the debuff, which makes every other tower hit harder, and the skull skip. It is strongest against Dreadbloon (outside its primary immunity phase), Blastapopoulos and Phayze, and weakest against Bloonarius. Vortex is a mixed matchup: you stop its shield and stun, but you also lose the knockback.

It pairs well with Super Brittle and with the Mermonkey’s Popseidon. Even Degree 1 is enough to skip a skull if you buy it a few rounds early. Higher degrees shorten the Eclipse cooldown and increase how long the debuff stays up. For cheap degree, sacrifice tier 5 Ice Monkeys and spam Icicles crosspaths; 2-0-2 and 3-0-2 are the cheapest options.

Tricky Tracks: the new Expert map

Tricky Tracks Expert map in BTD6, a train station with diagonal railway tracks
Tricky Tracks, Update 52’s Expert map

Tricky Tracks is set inside a train station, and it won the 7 Year Anniversary Map Competition. Four railway tracks cross the screen diagonally from the top right to the bottom left, but bloons only use the top three. Each of those carries two lanes running in opposite directions, so the map has six entrances and six exits. There is no water and there are no junctions.

Bloons rush to the middle of their track, pause briefly, then speed out to their exit. That pause is your kill zone. Crowd control and splash damage get the most value there.

Stop lights and trains

The map’s mechanic is a set of stop lights. Activating one costs $2,500 and sends a train down the track to its left. The train destroys most non-MOAB bloons outright, deals 10 damage to everything else and stuns MOAB-class bloons (except BADs and Bosses) for 10 seconds. Using any light puts all of them on a shared 60-second cooldown, and each later use costs $2,500 more than the last. Geraldo’s Rejuv Potion and Sandbox cooldown resets don’t affect it.

Towers that work here

The three lanes are far apart, so coverage matters more than raw damage. Long-range and seeking towers work well. A Deadeye Desperado’s range buff helps short-range towers reach more lanes. The Archmage (5-2-0 is usually the preferred crosspath) and Etienne, thanks to his range buff, both do well. Monkey Aces and Heli Pilots are weak here because the lanes are so spread out.

Note that 52.1 made the map faster (see the patch section below), and players rate the current version as a lot harder than the launch version.

Balance changes in v52.0

The big system change is that Fire and Plasma are now separate damage types. In the base game they behave the same as before: neither can damage Purple or Glass Bloons. The split exists for Frontier Legends, where Fire deals +1 damage to Dynamite Bloons. Fire attacks include the Ring of Fire, Inferno Ring, The Desert Phantom and the Archmage. Plasma includes the Plasma Monkey Fan Club, Apache Prime and the Sun Avatar.

Dart Monkey

UpgradeChangeType
Juggernaut (4-0-0)Projectiles no longer bounce off map edges (Ultra-Juggernaut still bounces)Fix

Apex Plasma Master (Paragon)Bonus damage to Bosses +80 → +60Nerf
Apex Plasma Master (Paragon)Main projectile damage 15 → 25Buff

The Apex Plasma Master now fires 20% slower and does less against Bosses, but each projectile hits much harder against regular bloons and MOABs. Expect it to be a little weaker in boss events.

Bomb Shooter

UpgradeChangeType
Bomb Blitz (0-0-5)Passive cooldown 60s → 75sNerf
Bomb Blitz (0-0-5)Initial cooldown 20s → 25sNerf

Bomb Blitz now saves you from leaks less often, so don’t rely on it as your only emergency button.

The Desert Phantom (X-X-5)Knockback: MOAB-class -1x → -2x, Lead/Ceramic -2x → -3x, Rainbow and below -2x → -3xBuff

The shotgun path is the winner here. Avenger is $2,000 cheaper and now pushes MOABs back ten times harder, which makes it a real stall tower in the mid game. The Desert Phantom pushes harder against everything.

Heli Pilot

UpgradeChangeType
MOAB Shove (0-0-3)BFB speed multiplier 0.1x → 0.11x; ZOMG and DDT 0.61x → 0.75xNerf
MOAB Shove + Bigger Jets (0-1-3)BFB speed multiplier -0.01x → 0x; ZOMG and DDT 0.5x → 0.64xNerf

MOAB Shove no longer pushes BFBs backwards with Bigger Jets; they now come to a full stop instead. ZOMGs and DDTs move noticeably faster under it. Comanche Defense is unchanged.

Super Monkey

Sun Temple (4-X-X) and aboveBallistic Missile minimum range 75 → 100Nerf
Sun Temple (4-X-X) and aboveMini-Sun Avatars no longer stop attacking when their parent tower is soldFix

This is the biggest nerf in the update. Cheap sacrifices used to unlock most of the Sun Temple benefits. Now the first tier alone needs $10,001 of a category, so an early Temple with a few small sacrifices gets far less out of them.

Mermonkey

The Mermonkey is $100 cheaper to place and much cheaper to take into the middle path. Riptide Champion alone drops by $800. The top path loses a little tentacle pierce at tiers 3 and 4, but Lord of the Abyss attacks faster.

Spike Factory

UpgradeChangeType

The Mega Massive Munitions Factory took a heavy hit against Bosses. Its Carpet of Spikes boss bonus is nearly halved, and the main attack is slower and weaker.

SilasRime’s MOAB-class slow now applies correctly to all MOAB-class bloons, not just MOABsNerf
Silas L6+Vision of Ice can no longer attack in the range of non-Ice Monkey towersFix

Striker Jones loses most of his stun on bigger blimps, especially ZOMGs. Obyn‘s Wall of Trees eats fewer bloons, and Psi‘s blast comes around a little less often. The Silas change technically fixes a bug, but it works as a nerf, and Ninja Kiwi said they may revisit it.

Other changes in Update 52

Quests

A new quest category, Frontier Legends Preview Tales, holds the free Frontier Legends demo described above. It unlocks at Level 5.

Rogue Legends

  • The Permanent Artifacts page now shows how many artifacts you own and has a search bar.
  • The Low Knowledge curse now correctly disables Monkey Knowledge bought from the XP Shop.
  • The Quantum Leap artifact no longer shortens Support Chinook supply crate lifespans.
  • Rosalia’s movement now matches her Workshop category.
  • Players who equipped the Rogue theme through a bug, without owning Rogue Legends, lose it.

Cosmetics, audio and platform

  • Trophy Store text emotes now use a white speech bubble, except “Happy Holidays”, which keeps its own style.
  • Midnight Mansion’s default music is now “Haunted House”.
  • On Google Play, the game now requires Android 8.0 or newer (previously 5.0).

Notable bug fixes

  • Towers now stay stunned by Bosses after you reload a game.
  • Juggernaut and Mermonkey Ice Jet projectiles no longer bounce off map edges.
  • The Spike Paragon’s +480 MOAB bonus now works as intended.
  • Spiked Mines damage over time now applies its final tick.
  • Mini-Sun Avatars keep attacking after their parent tower is sold.
  • Some projectiles no longer lose their tower category when the parent tower is sold.
  • Co-op guests now have their pops recorded correctly, and losing with an active Alchemist transforming tonic no longer crashes the game.
  • Contested Territory item animations and the team score display work again.
  • Admiral Brickell no longer turns invisible during her Aerial Deployment animation after Retry Last Round.
  • Several Corvus crashes when using or loading saves are fixed.
  • Selling a Banana Farm linked to a Banana Farmer Pro no longer crashes the game.
  • Quincy’s trophy placement animation no longer breaks after loading and restarting.

Patches after v52.0

v52.1 (5 December 2025)

Released two days after launch on Steam (7 December on Epic). It made the following changes:

  • Tricky Tracks is faster. Bloon speed was raised to match the intended difficulty, cutting the average lane time by about 40% (from roughly 10-11 seconds to 6-7). The stop light hitboxes are smaller, and a Banana Farm placement overlap was fixed.
  • Engineer Paragon Overclock reworked. Tier 4 towers now get 60s (previously 45s) and tier 5 towers get 60s (previously 30s), both without a duration penalty. Paragons drop to 15s (previously 30s). Towers in the area of effect get 60s instead of 30s.
  • Super Brittle no longer stops other Ice Monkeys from damaging the bloons it debuffs.
  • Frontier Legends economy. Most early encounters give +50 Bananite on a win, and fishing restores Stamina (1% to 10% by rarity). Stamina regenerates far faster: passive 0.033 → 0.166 per second, Campfire 1 → 10 per second, Homestead 4 → 30 per second. Sheriff Morale recovery doubles to 1% per second.
  • A long list of Frontier Legends UI and crash fixes, plus a co-op crash when leaving games.

v52.2 (10 December 2025)

  • Blue, Green, BFB, ZOMG and BAD can now appear as Roaming Bloons. There are more Roaming Bloons in total, they get tougher and more numerous at night, and their animations were redone.
  • Campfires now restore Stamina to 100% (previously 80%), and Stamina keeps recovering while the game is closed.
  • Quick Draw timing is stricter, but failing against low-tier bloons costs less.
  • Legend of the Night’s passive now triggers when Frontier Legends-exclusive bloons leak.
  • Corvus’s Nourishment spell is disabled in Frontier Legends.
  • Trait changes. Admiral Brickell’s neutral trait changes from Twister to Kickin’. Jiangshi Sauda’s traits change from Undertaker to Friendly and from Longshot to Spotter. Twister/Dust-devil no longer rolls on Spike Factories.

What Update 52 means for your games

  • Bring Herald of Everfrost to boss events. A Degree 1 Herald bought a few rounds early can skip a skull. Against Dreadbloon, Phayze and Blastapopoulos, the freeze and gimmick shutdown are worth more than its price in damage.
  • Try the Mermonkey again. At $275 to place and $1,100 for Riptide Champion, the middle path is much easier to reach early. Echosense Network’s range stacks also go up to +100%.
  • Use the Desperado shotgun path for stalling. Avenger is cheaper and now knocks MOABs back properly. It is an affordable way to buy time against blimps.
  • Rethink Sun Temple sacrifices. Small sacrifices barely count now. Plan for $10,001 or more per category, or skip the Temple and go straight to other investments.
  • Expect less from Striker, Obyn and MOAB Shove. Strategies that leaned on Striker’s ZOMG stuns or Bigger Jets reversing BFBs need extra stall or damage now.
  • Cover every lane on Tricky Tracks. Since 52.1 the lanes are fast. Use long-range towers and range buffs, and save the $2,500 trains for MOAB-heavy rounds where the 10-second stun matters most.

Quick take: If you play boss events, Herald of Everfrost is the change you will feel most. For normal games, the Sun Temple nerf and the Mermonkey cost cuts matter most.
